Wellink Perspective on the Tidal Model of Recovery Wellink Trust is an independent not for profit organisation providing a range of social and personal support services for people who use mental health services. We are based in Wellington, New Zealand. We were established in 1990. We have been inspired by the Tidal Model of Recovery. The principles behind this model have been one of the factors that has increased our confidence as an organisation to move beyond the more conventional aims of mental health services. For us this has meant developing services that are based on incorporating the whole of human experience into mental health recovery. The Tidal Model has helped us articulate some key themes that we want to promote as pad of our service. These include:  | engaging the skills and resources of local communities to assist with peoples' mental health recovery | | acknowledging that people generally have an inherent ability to self heal and a deep inner knowledge about how to go about this. People should be supported to work with these strengths — not have health solutions imposed on them | | seeking to understand humanity rather than diagnosed mental illnesses in supporting people in their mental health recovery | | valuing authentic human qualities such as common sense, respect, compassion, self awareness and community building (rather than clinical qualifications) as the basic building blocks of a good mental health service | | using down-to-earth language about mental health issues rather than medicalised terminology helps to widen the range of solutions for people |
It is difficult for community organisations such as ours to implement more humanistic approaches that go against mainstream service delivery and policy based on the medicalisation of mental health. We need highly articulate champions like Phil Barker and Poppy Buchanan Barker to provide encouragement and provide us with convincing and well founded material to underpin what we do.
