The
Royal Ottawa Hospital mental health facility
has championed the establishment and development
of the Tidal Model in Canada since 2002,
inspiring the development of other Tidal
projects from coast to coast.
The ROH Tidal
project was started,
originally, by
three inspirational nurses: Nurse Scholar, Dr Nancy Brookes,
VP and Chief of Nursing Practice, Marg Tansey and Clinical Nurse Educator,
Lisa Murata. They began
with
three program areas and hosted the
launch of the Tidal Model in North
America in November 2003, with their
first conference, with a follow-up
conference in October 2004.
Nancy, Margaret and
Lisa have inspired not only
their colleagues in Ottawa, but also
huge numbers of nurses and other health
care professionals across Canada and
parts of the USA. The team regularly take
visitors around their various programs,
which operate on the Tidal Model
philosophy. Presently this ranges across
their mood and anxiety program,
forensic, substance abuse and concurrent
disorder, and older person's program.
In
2005 the team (pictured above) presented at the
first international Tidal conference -Making
Waves - in Matamata, New Zealand, where they
spoke passionately about 'Sharing Tidal Stories'
within their nursing team, and its impact on
their philosophy of care..
The
Royal Ottawa Hospital is a teaching hospital
of the University of Ottawa. The hospital offers
both inpatient and outpatient programs, tailored
to individual needs and developed in conjunction
with patients and their support system.

The
Mission of the Royal Ottawa Hospital
states:
We are not bound by our past –
We are the inventors of our future
What
else need be said? If only all 'mission
statements' were so simple and honest.

At
the following link pages you have an opportunity
to meet some of the ROH Team members - putting
some faces to names.
You
might also enjoy reading some of
the ROH
team's reflections on their
engagement with their work - "Telling Ottawa
Tidal Stories".
We
hope that you enjoy meeting these remarkable
people half as much as we did.

In this paper we

commitments are

and provide
examples of
successes and
challenges.
