A selection of the comments from the User-Focused evaluation at Tosnú, Cork, Ireland
Research is a useful way of informing us about the world 'in general'. However, the genuine test of any model of mental health care lies at the level of the personal experience of individual service users or consumers. There is little value in knowing that an approach is 'effective in general', but discovering that it makes no difference 'in particular'. Only the individual can comment on the individual experience of care, framed by any particular model or theory of care.

The Tosnú team asked the people who used their service to comment on their experience of being cared from, within the Tidal Model. Here is a selection of their comments.

  •    "I feel that I got all the time and support I needed to help me recover".

  •  The nursing assessment given was personal, in that I talked about myself and my feelings."

  • I felt very good as the nurse understood my whole situation.

  • I felt the nurses were really concerned for me, they listened to what I had to say.  I felt that I was important.  I felt I could easily share my thoughts and feelings with them and I didn’t feel I was just a number.

  • It was useful to me as it gave me a plan of action, which helped my confidence and belief in myself.

  • The assessment was quite easy to understand – putting the questions in a different way on the right side made it easier to know what the question was looking for.

  • To me it’s better to use my words to write about me, than to solely use someone else’s interpretation of me and only their ideas and experience of knowledge of me.

  • The assessment was personal, but at the same time encouraged me to discuss matters.  Also helped in getting to know and trust my named nurse.

  • It was better in that it was written in my own words so who ever read, understood me better and my situation.

  • The nursing assessment helped me immensely. The nurse enabled me feel at ease especially given that I never came into contact with psychiatric services before.

  • My own input was valued and the relationship between nurse and patient was a helping empowering relationship.

  • It helped me to think about my problems and the direction my life was going in.

  • It was very helpful to get your thoughts out in the open.
