Irene's Story

All too often people using
mental health services are caricatured as
unintelligent, or even potentially violent
'lunatics', incapable of enjoying what might be
called a 'normal' life.
Irene's story
challenges the folly of such negative stereotypes
and offers a more realistic and optimistic picture
of what it is like for someone to live with a
diagnosis of mental illness.
Irene's Story features
a day in the life of one woman who has lived with
the diagnosis of manic depression for over 20 years.
Irene shows herself to be an extremely independent
and creative woman. This film celebrates the
richness of her life, as she refuses to embrace the
stigma so often associated with mental illness.
Irene's Story is the
result of a unique collaboration between Dr Irene
Whitehill, Mental health User Consultant; Dr Phil
Barker and Tony Glover, the Sony Award Winning film
maker.
